ROOTA proudly nominated Akello Patricia, a lawyer and co-founder of Uganda's Nkunzi Foundation, to participate in the Global Youth Environment Assembly and associated UN events from February 17th to March 1st, 2024. Akello's experience reflects ROOTA's commitment to empowering young leaders for sustainability and social change.
At the Global Youth Environment Assembly, Akello engaged in discussions on plastic pollution and children's environmental rights, witnessing the handover of draft resolutions to UNEP's Executive Director Inger Andersen. Subsequently, at the OECPR and UNEA-6, she participated in negotiations where crucial resolutions were adopted, marking a significant step towards addressing climate change and biodiversity loss. Akello was ecstatic to engage in discussions and contribute to drafting resolutions on plastic pollution. She was also able to interact with leaders under UNEP and at the UN office of Nairobi which, "...fueled my inspiration to strive for excellence and create impact in my community". Through this opportunity, the discussions and resources provided empowered Akello to engage in her own community.
Reflecting on her journey, Akello expressed profound gratitude to ROOTA for offering her and other young leaders such transformative experiences. She emphasized the importance of inclusion and empowerment in fostering effective leadership and creating positive change in communities. ROOTA's support has not only broadened Akello's understanding of global environmental challenges but has also inspired her to contribute actively to solutions, as evidenced by her acceptance into the Climate Diplomacy Academy 2024.
In Akello's words, "I am grateful to ROOTA for offering us young people with
these spaces. They create a great impact in our lives and push us to become better leaders in our
communities". Through our commitment to empowering youth like Akello, ROOTA continues to drive positive change and foster sustainable development worldwide.
