ROOTA offers Adult Learners from the Zabaleen Community the gift of Literacy
The Association for the Protection of the Environment (APE), one of our local partners in Egypt, supports the holistic development of the community of garbage collectors in Cairo by providing income generating programs, education and health programs and supporting the empowerment of women.
An award winning documentary that "follows three teenage boys into the trash trade and growing up in the world's largest garbage village on the outskirts of Cairo."
The artist, eLSeed used more than 50 buildings as his canvas to celebrate the Egyptian capital's trash collectors, who are largely viewed as second class citizens.

In the fall of 2017 the Rotary Club of Scarborough hosted a speaker from ROOTA to talk about the work being done to help the Zabaleen of Egypt.
ROOTA has been accredited consultative status with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) since 2021 and the UN Economic and Social Council since 2023. We are also a registered charity, charitable #783861529 RR 0001.
