SIFTERS REPURPOSING TRASH

GENERATION Z ZABALEEN WEARING GLOVES WHILE SIFTING THROUGH GARBAGE

It was a pleasure seeing the younger generation of Zabaleen girls sifting through garbage wearing gloves.  This is what education does as they are now wearing protective gloves while doing what they usually do but taking protective measures.

Thank you to you our donors for making this possible and helping them to stop the cycle of poverty.  Without your help this would not have been possible. Now with your kind donations, the Zabaleen women are trained for a period of three months to learn how to work on a glass recycling furnace, where the use of glass recycling technology is a rare thing in Egypt and the Middle East, and it was usual to throw broken glass in the streets because the garbage workers did not know the technique of recycling and using it again

AGRICULTURAL PROJECT -GREEN HOUSES

This initiative aims to achieve three main results:

1- Establishing an agricultural environmental model that supports food security and the production of crops

that adapt to climate change and takes into account the rationalization of water consumption, and also

raises environmental awareness for children, students and academic researchers about the effects of

climate change and how to adapt to it and reduce its negative effects.

2- Increasing income for the families of the Zabbaleen communities through the participation of 14 individuals

in the operations of planting, harvesting, preparing vegetables, packing, and selling to the public.

3- Providing healthy, sustainable and organic food to the general public, especially children and patients

suffering from malnutrition and anemia.

Through this initiative, 4 cooled agricultural greenhouses were created with an automatic control system for drip

irrigation and control of temperature and humidity inside each greenhouse. Thus, crops can be grown throughout the

year.

BENEFICIARIES-EDUCATIOAL SITE

The total number of direct beneficiaries is about 1,014 beneficiaries (14 agricultural workers + 600 children who

receive daily healthy nutrition + 400 patients with malnutrition and anemia who receive healthy meals to complement

drug treatment), in addition to indirect beneficiaries from the local community, numbering about 2,500. Beneficiaries

of those who receive organic agricultural crops that support healthy living at affordable prices.

YOUTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

The total number of direct beneficiaries is about 1,014 beneficiaries (14 agricultural workers + 600 children who

OVERCOMING OBSTACLES

This initiative faced some difficulties that were overcome, the most important of which was that the location of the

land on which the greenhouses were built was used as a dumping ground for waste collection, which required

removing and transporting a large amount of waste while bringing in alternative soil from compost to feed the crops,

and also the weakness of the government water source, which does not support adequate water pressure. It is

sufficient to irrigate greenhouses, and this was overcome by creating a deep basin to collect and store water, then

pumping the water into drip pipes via a pump..

GLASS RECYCLING PROGRAM

ART FROM TRASH

A stylish, detailed necklace made using recycled Nespresso caps

The Zabaleen are the informal garbage collectors as they collect garbage since they migrated from Upper Egypt to Cairo in 1940.  They have been repurposing garbage with great efficiency as they recycle around 80% of the garbage in Egypt.  They collect garbage from door to door and then head to garbage city where the women start their mission of sifting through the garbage at the early hours of the day.  By recycling trash they help the environment  and our earth. Items such as these Nespresso caps are used to create pieces of art which otherwise would have been garbage.  ROOTA through their faithful donors help them do what they are doing in a healthier, safer and more hygienic way.  Education is the key word as through education and knowledge they will evolve in sifting the garbage in a healthier manner.
